Moving Day

Well, today is my day off and moving day... I have to move to a different building today because they're starting to renovate the girl's building one floor at a time. So the girl's from the basement are moving up to a different building, and there needs to be a SM there, too. That's me! :P The girl's moved last night. So, I had to move my bed up yesterday so I could sleep there last night... And today I got everything moved in (thanks to the help of the other SM's!!).

Last night we heard a little more about Amalie... She has still been in the induced coma, but when her mom squeezed her hand, Amalie squeezed back a few times. This morning they're supposed to take her drug dosage down and slowly bring her out of the coma while watching her closely... If it goes well, she could be conscious today, but if something unexpected comes up, they'll put the medicine back to what it was and she'll stay in the coma. Today is a big day so we pray it works out for the best.

Amalie's best friends were some of the ones who had to move yesterday. I'm sure it was difficult for Anika to move all of Amalie's stuff... But they all seem to be excited about moving. The building they're moving into (Bakkehuset) used to be a kindergarten school with 4 classrooms. So the girl's have HUGE rooms now and are really happy about it. It makes it so much easier to move when they're so excited about it too. :)

I think I'll really like my room.

Finding Blessings in Tragedy

Today was a sad day. Not long after I started working, I received a call from a distressed student telling me to come up to the stables because another student, Amalie, was hurt. I wasn't sure how serious it was because I'm used to girls getting kicked in the leg or stepped on by these incredibly stupid horses. I ran to get Bamse (the vehicle the SM's have to drive. Bamse means 'teddy bear' in Danish) and called Ina (SM from Germany) to come with me because I didn't know what to expect. Ina and I go up to the stables to find Amalie surrounded by 3 other students and 3 adults. From where we were standing we didn't see how serious it was, but we could see she was on the ground. We went over to see if we could do anything and Amalie was breathing but unconscious. One of the adults was trying to get her to respond to her name. The only response was her legs and arms restlessly moving, and sometimes she would make noises as if she was having a bad dream. Finally, a paramedic-type person came. He was an older man and kind of clumsy. I was really concerned because he tried stepping over Amalie and ended up stepping on her leg. (Thankfully, her leg wasn't [previously] injured) A few minutes later, the ambulance came and I had a chance to ask Anika (the student who called me) what happened.

Anika and Amalie were walking their horses towards the stables and Anika's horse kicked Amalie's horse which made that horse somehow kick Amalie in the back of her head.

After Amalie was taken into the ambulance, Ina and I drove a couple of the girls back down to the school. They were very shook up. Especially Kathrine. She had been holding Amalie's head and had blood all over her arm. I was really surprised at how calm and brave she was during the whole thing. As we were walking towards Bamse, Kathrine just started crying. I felt so proud of her and let her know.

Word spread like wildfire as soon as we drove down the hill. At one point, I looked outside and saw about 6 students crying and hugging each other. I knew I needed to take this opportunity to pray with them. So I did. And it was the first of many prayers today.

Soon after that we found out that her skull was fractured and [I think] she was induced into a coma. A few hours later she had surgery to relieve the pressure built up in her skull, and I think that went well. We don't know much more than that.

Interestingly enough, Amalie was just voted 'Efterskolen Student of the Year.' ALSO, today was the beginning of the Week of Spiritual Emphasis. I don't find it to be a coincidence that it happened like this. I don't think there's a nice sounding way to say this, but even though this is a terrible thing that happened, I can't think of a better time or person for it to happen to. I believe that Amalie will make it out and God will answer the prayers of these students. And because I believe this, that's why I say that it's the best person for it to happen to. This is a great opportunity for God to bring a variety of different people to look towards God again or for the first time! I think nearly everyone at the school knows Amalie and loves her. She's so happy and bubbly and full of life.

But do keep her and all the students here in your prayers. And keep Bobby Bovell, the pastor this week, in your prayers as well. God has some plans and let's pray the devil doesn't get in the way.

It's been an eventful day/night, and I think it's time for me to get some rest. :)

Weekend Duty

This weekend has been very busy and full of energy from the students, which is a good thing and a bad thing. It makes it difficult to keep them quiet at night when they should be sleeping, but on the other hand it makes it more fun when all the students are happy.

This time of year is difficult because the winter is so long and dark. At the heart of the winter season the sun comes up at 8:30 in the morning and goes down at 3:30 in the afternoon. It's very dark and cold and very cloudy during the winter so a lot of the students get depressed at times.

But it's getting better now that the sun is going down later and coming up earlier. And the sun is out more! It's so refreshing!

Galla was great. The theme was '3G Musical.' They had a lot of good food and entertainment. They made a mini-musical of parts of different musicals (i.e. Phantom of the Opera, High School Musical, Grease, etc.). Galla started at around 5:45pm and ended around midnight. It was a long night. :)

Sorry so short again, but work calls.

Vi ses! (See you later)

Busy in Denmark

I've been wanting to start a blog. I know it's late in the year, but better late than never. I've had some interesting stories and need a place to share them.

Tonight we have Gallafest. Galla is usually just for 3G's (more explanation on classes later), but since this is such a small school compared to public schools, all the classes can go. It's like a sort of banquet but with some traditional dances and fun entertainment. There were a couple younger girls who wanted to hire someone to come to the school and do their hair during church, but the dean had to explain they had to go to church.

We have 6 different class levels... 8th, 9th, and 10th class - Kind of the grades right before high school. And then we have 'gymnasium' - 1G, 2G, 3G. The gymnasium is like our version of high school.

I have to go supervise the pool, but more stories to come. :)
